Speed Up Your Boot Time

If you’re using XP or Vista (and what else would you complain about boot time on?), here’s a quick tip to speed up the booting process.

  1. Open the “msconfig” tool, using Run, Start Search, or navigating to it in explorer. You can also do this by hand in the boot.ini file, if you prefer to get your hands dirty…
  2. In XP, click the “BOOT.INI” tab. On Vista, the “Boot” tab.
  3. Be sure not to click around in the entries, as the one you’re booted to will already be highlighted.
  4. Click “Advanced Options”.
  5. Check the NUMPROC option, naming will vary slightly.
  6. Specify the number of processors you have.

An example of the advanced boot menu in msconfig.

If you’re curious what this actually does, it tells Windows how many processors it can access. It can be used to limit the number of processors available to Windows, or to save it the trouble of figuring things out for itself.

Mileage will vary.Depending on your specific PC and it’s configuration, this may actually slow your boot time.In most cases it is an improvement, however, so give it a go and do what works best for you.
