Songbird and SkreemR

Mozilla, the company that brought us Firefox and Thunderbird (as well as many less-notable programs), has ventured into the media player business. Enter Songbird.

Songbird’s interface clearly takes a cue from iTunes, however is a far cry from it. It integrates a web browser with tabs and search, functioning very much like Firefox, including a specific site known as SkreemR. I hadn’t known about this site until I discovered it in Songbird, but www.skreemr.com is an excellent source for free mp3s, and can even stream them to you and play in-browser. Songbird takes advantage of this site, parsing and integrating the functionality.

In addition to just SkreemR, as you browse the web in Songbird it will scrape each page for mp3s and offer you a quick way to browse and download them in a panel at the bottom (just like when buying music from iTunes, except of course free). This is extremely innovative.

This bodes well for the next generation of music players, and though still in development and not completely stable, Songbird is already an excellent and viable media player. Check it out!
