iPod/iPhone 2.0 Firmware Jailbreak
1,600 views
In the iPod/iPhone (iPhod?) community, everyone’s talking about the 2.0 firmware series. The appstore has brought sanctioned 3rd party apps to the iPhod and a jailbreak lets you get the best of both worlds. This one is a bit harder than previous ones, and even I had trouble getting it to work due to numerous errors and difficulties. This is not one of those guides that details the usage of winpwn - this is a guide for those who have trouble with the now-standard jb methods for 2.0. This guide assumes that you’ve tried the normal methods or at least are fairly competant with the process of upgrading your iPhod firmware.
I’ve found that a combination of winpwn and xpwn work for me to make and use the firmware. Here’s the process:
- Get a copy of the 2.0 firmware - for the iPod Touch this file is called “iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw”. If you have an iPhone this is free. If not, torrent it or buy it, that’s up to you.
- Download winpwn - http://winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page - as of my writing the current version is 2.0.0.3, and that’s the version I used. (Direct Link - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YCJDFEHW)
- Download xpwn - http://xpwn.blogspot.com/ - this is the backend to winpwn, but some of this works better than winpwn, and vice versa IMO and experience. (Direct Link - http://www.iphone-dev.org/xpwn/xpwn-windows-nightly.zip and http://www.mediafire.com/?9mdezqi2jem)
- Make a folder and extract the files for xpwn, the bootloaders (the mediafire link) and a copy of the original firmware into it.
- Install winpwn.
- Open winpwn, select the firmware file.
- Click ‘Build ISPW’ and check the Cydia box, optionally add boot/restore images.
- Click the button to start the process, and wait for it to complete.
- Close iTunes, and if you want to be extra safe, kill it’s processes:
- AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
- AppleSyncNotifier.exe
- iPodService.exe
- iTunes.exe
- iTunesHelper.exe
- Fire up a command prompt (you should know how to do this, but run->cmd.exe).
- cd to your directory, and run this (yourfirmwarefile refers to the one that came OUT of winpwn):
itunespwn yourfirmwarefile.ispw
- Now run this:
idevice yourfirmwarefile.ispw #####
The number signs stand for your device. Here’s a list:
- 2g iPhone - m68ap
- 3g iPhone - n82ap
- iPod Touch - n45ap
- Follow the on-screen instructions to guide your phone into DFU mode with confirmation. If you make a mistake, it will tell you and you can ALWAYS start over, so relax.
- When you get it right, it will run a little hack on your iPhod to get it to accept custom firmware, you can then boot up iTunes.
- Shift-click the restore button, navigate to your custom firmware, and restore it. Things should go smoothly, no errors, etc.
At this point you should have a nice clean jailbroken copy of firmware 2.0 - if not, you’ve done something wrong, or encountered a problem I didn’t. Feel free to comment for help, and I’ll do what I can to assist you. Good luck!

This jailbreak method for firmware 2.0 is amazing. I’ve been struggling with WinPwn for ages (Not pwning Itunes properly, which made DFU mode constantly turn the screen white and make it boot into recovery mode). This method works 100% and is very easy. Thanks
Bent.
Also you should look more into xpwn, it can build custom firmwares as well which means you could totally eliminate winpwn.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you faster alex - I’m glad to hear you got it working.
Bentzilla: Glad you like it, I did try xpwn for that as well, but it failed to build the firmware. This is really the only method that would fly for me.
I’m thrilled this is being useful for everyone!

im having a lot of trouble w/ this. i downloaded the 2.0 update (iPod1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore) via torrent and installed it a while back (using itunes shift+update). i still have the file but when i select it in winpwn it shows up as:
8/7/2008 9:42:10 PM - Unknown file: C:\Users\June Kim\Desktop\2.0 Jailbreak\iPod1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw
obviously it wont recognize the update (even though it works, i used it). plz help me i really wana jailbreak this.

If there are no errors how do you know that it worked? I can run installer but when I try to download any apps it says it can connect

ok, my ipod is really frustrating me now.
things i have:
-original 2.0 firmware
-original 1.1.5 firmware
-custom 2.0 firmware courtesy of….
-….winpwn 2.0.0.3
-xpwn
-itunes 7.7
-windows xp pro sp3
-ipod touch 8gb (current status: dead)
things i have done:
-got custom 2.0 firmware, have tried shift-restore billions of times after ipwning itunes, have only received billions of 1604 (in recovery mode) and 1601 (dfu mode) error messages.
-finally, saw this tutorial, think ‘YES!!!!’
-did everything there, get up to step 13 of the tutorial. xpwn tries putting ipod in dfu mode, screen goes white, xpwn says it has succeeded. tells me to shutdown ipod. i do so, by holding down power button. it is still attached to the computer. all itunes-related processes are shut down manually via task manager. i turn it off, clarify that i have done so with xpwn, and then it says ‘waiting for iphone/ipod to power off’. it remained that way for ten minutes.
i am positive i did nothing wrong: so what did go wrong?

whitesexybeast:
You shouldn’t be turning off your iPod after getting to DFU - I’m not sure when/why it told you to do that, but after it says it’s successful you should immediately open iTunes and flash your custom firmware.
louis:
This is likely a bad firmware image, they should be around 222MB. try downloading another one. As well, make sure you’ve got the newest winpwn (2.0.0.3). You could also try using xpwn to make the custom firmware image, but this didn’t work for me.
You’ll want to run this from the xpwn directory to make a custom image:
ipsw iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw custom.ipsw -nowipe bundles\Cydia.tar

Louis - The reason you are having problems is because of the firmware file you downloaded.
You downloaded this - iPod1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw
On the winpwn site it said it dropped support for the 345 firmware file which explains why you can use it in itunes (it is an official image than itunes allows, but cannot be pwned any more by recent versions of winpwn)
There are three ways to solve your problem.
1. Recommended. Download the 347 firmware file. iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
2. Try using Xpwn to pwn the 345 image.
3. Downgrade you winpwn to an earlier version. Not recommended.
Hope that helped.

Thank you so much for this guide I FINALLY was able to JB my 2.01 with this! I think my biggest problem was I never got my ipod into tru DFU mode until now and it worked like a champ.
