Louis - The reason you are having problems is because of the firmware file you downloaded.
You downloaded this - iPod1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw
On the winpwn site it said it dropped support for the 345 firmware file which explains why you can use it in itunes (it is an official image than itunes allows, but cannot be pwned any more by recent versions of winpwn)
There are three ways to solve your problem.
1. Recommended. Download the 347 firmware file. iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
2. Try using Xpwn to pwn the 345 image.
3. Downgrade you winpwn to an earlier version. Not recommended.

Hope that helped.

whitesexybeast:

You shouldn't be turning off your iPod after getting to DFU - I'm not sure when/why it told you to do that, but after it says it's successful you should immediately open iTunes and flash your custom firmware.

louis:

This is likely a bad firmware image, they should be around 222MB. try downloading another one. As well, make sure you've got the newest winpwn (2.0.0.3). You could also try using xpwn to make the custom firmware image, but this didn't work for me.

You'll want to run this from the xpwn directory to make a custom image:

ipsw iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw custom.ipsw -nowipe bundles\Cydia.tar

ok, my ipod is really frustrating me now.

things i have:

-original 2.0 firmware
-original 1.1.5 firmware
-custom 2.0 firmware courtesy of....
-....winpwn 2.0.0.3
-xpwn
-itunes 7.7
-windows xp pro sp3
-ipod touch 8gb (current status: dead)

things i have done:

-got custom 2.0 firmware, have tried shift-restore billions of times after ipwning itunes, have only received billions of 1604 (in recovery mode) and 1601 (dfu mode) error messages.

-finally, saw this tutorial, think 'YES!!!!'

-did everything there, get up to step 13 of the tutorial. xpwn tries putting ipod in dfu mode, screen goes white, xpwn says it has succeeded. tells me to shutdown ipod. i do so, by holding down power button. it is still attached to the computer. all itunes-related processes are shut down manually via task manager. i turn it off, clarify that i have done so with xpwn, and then it says 'waiting for iphone/ipod to power off'. it remained that way for ten minutes.

i am positive i did nothing wrong: so what did go wrong?

Sorry I didn't get back to you faster alex - I'm glad to hear you got it working.

Bentzilla: Glad you like it, I did try xpwn for that as well, but it failed to build the firmware. This is really the only method that would fly for me.

I'm thrilled this is being useful for everyone! :)

hi!

this tutorial has worked GREAT for me. there is only one problem. after i finish with ALL the steps, when it finishes the process with "Preparing iPod for restore", it gives me an error where it sais that the iPod cannot be restored, due to unknown errors. :| what can i do?? and now in iTunes, all i see at the iPod details is "n/a".

i could use a little help, i'm a noob in jailbreaking and unbricking iPods.

thanks!
