Blog Engines

A blog engine, a term I just made up, as I’m not certain they’re called engines, is the backend of a Blog. In case you’re really clueless, you’re browsing a Blog now. Blog is an abbreviation of “Weblog”, which essentially means a journal, or a templated website that consists of topical posts. Now that you know what it is we’re discussing, let’s move forward, shall we?

There are several blog engines, and the two major players are:

  • Wordpress
  • Blogger

Blogger is a subsidiary of Google, and is what this blog is hosted on. It’s a good Blog Engine from my experience, but I’ve also used Wordpress from time to time.

I’ve got a new job with a web hosting company, and as one of the many awesome benefits, I get free web hosting and with it, free blog hosting. Wordpress is their service of choice. You may be thinking “…but it’s already free… you can just goto wordpress.com!” Yes, that’s true, but with the software installed on a web server that I’ve access to, I can even edit the PHP and various low-level features. This is going to make things much more interesting. As well, I can host many more uploads, etc., than on a free account on either blogger.com or wordpress.com. I like all of my things to be in one place, and that’s the main reason I’m switching over to Wordpress.

The differences between Wordpress and Blogger (AKA Blogspot) are not too numerous. It used to be that Blogger offered more low-level editing features, etc., but Wordpress has them now. It would appear that Wordpress has a slightly confusing control panel (or I’ve just used Blogger for too long, lol), but far more features.

Wordpress, however, has better organizational features, and the ability to host separate web pages all through the control panel. Granted as a web developer/designer I could just link to my pages, but it’s convenient, and for those who can’t, it’s great.

If you are choosing between the two, I’d go with Wordpress. The only reason not to is if it’s features are unnecessary and you’ve already got a Google account to log into Blogger with. Also, for the more web-savvy, you can download and install the Wordpress software anywhere you please. Some (like me) enjoy having full control over the software, and AFAIK blogger doesn’t and probably won’t ever offer this option.

Anyway you can find the two Blog Engines at their respective links below, and do a bit of experimentation to see which works best for you:

Well I know what a CMS is, and personally I feel that while a Blog is a form of CMS, it really is it’s own category as well. Joomla, for example, I’d call a CMS.
